Creating and Using a Sprite Base
Part 5: Reverse Views

It seemed like a waste to give the north-facing view its own page, so for this view:

Step One: Delete the facial features and anything else specific to the front view (like the belly button) and add anything specific to the back view (like the shoulder blades.)

Step Two: Done.

The northwest view is probably the hardest so far - at least, it was for me. Grab your southeast view, you'll need it for this.

Step One: As with the north view, start by deleting the facial features and anything else specific to the front view.

Step Two: The leg that is supposed to be in front needs to come down, and the leg in the back needs to go up. Both feet should be pointing in the direction that the sprite is facing.

Step Three: Draw in the shape of the back over the far arm. The far arm might need to be shortened.

Step Four: Draw in the front arm in front of the body.

Give yourself a pat on the back - you're finished with the standing sprite bases for every view! Take a well-earned break, and when you get back - Part 6: The Walking Animation.

Grindalf - Thanks! I was worried it might be the opposite of that. ^ ^;

Brenthenry - If you ever need to make one, I hope it's helpful!

Ashbad - Tell me how it works out!

Aurum - It looks great so far! Maybe try to take off some unnecessary pixels to make it more symmetrical, but other than that, it looks good! TBD

I'm done with south, southwest/southeast, and west/east, (these are finished but not published yet. X3) and I'm finishing up the back views (north and northeast/northwest - these are done, but I'm still in the process of actually writing the tutorial, heh.)

After that will come walking animations. Sorry it's taking a while, but them being uploaded one every few days gives me time to work on the rest of the pages.

Very VERY helpful! This is my first attempt and it looks very promising. I've only just finished with part 1 so far. Using Paint.net for making the sprite TBD

Edit:

After adding a vest and some hair, and color.

Decided to go with a vest because this was a test for me to see if I could at least do this and make it look somewhat good. The vest was already there in yours for me to see and go off of TBD

This Sprite Tutorial is the first one that I was actually able to get something out of! Thanks! TBD

Edit:

Created an Arachnid with this too TBD .. I love the red guidelines!

Mechron - It should, I can't think of a reason it can't. Just start with a human base (assuming your robot is humanoid.) Best of luck!

Playsoon - Great! I'm glad you're finding it so helpful! I never thought about making nonhuman sprites, but I guess I probably should (since I'll be needing at least one for my game as well, anyway) so I'll make a note to cover animals later in the guide if I can. I hope it will continue to be useful!

I just noticed that Deathworks and StarRaven talk the the same-like. But Deathworks uses colons. xD

Yup. Quite amazing if you think about it; considering that there were two people on this site alone. xD

Grindalf - You are good at sprites! TBD I'm glad I could still help, though.

victimofgrace - I'm only kidding. XD There are quite a lot of people who use proper spelling and grammar and such here.

I'm stealing the blue haired chick in part 2. I'm going to make her look like Shana from Shakugan No Shana. I wonder if I can make the sword and flames... that would be awesome!! I tried the tutorial to make a base but it didn't look right! My creativity doesn't extend into the graphical department.

Thank you for the great tutorial! I tried my hand at sprite creation while following your example, and not only did your methods simplify things, they seriously helped the overall look of my characters^^ I thank you again, and look forward to the conclusion of the tutorial.

rpg gamer 17 - That's fine! If you want to use anything in this tutorial, go for it.

Jaeger - You're quite welcome! I'm glade I could help!

I'll try to submit the next part of this tutorial sometime within the next week. Sorry it's been a while!
